Chroma
Chroma
Chroma is an open-source search and retrieval database and serverless platform for AI applications that delivers fast local vector search.
Chroma Cloud is a scalable search system supporting vector, semantic similarity, sparse vector, lexical (BM25, SPLADE), full-text, trigram, regex, and metadata search, along with features like forking, a CLI, and TypeScript, Python, and Rust clients. It targets developers (including millions of developers) and enterprises, offers $5 in free credits to get started and Serverless pricing with Pro and Enterprise plans, and differentiates itself with an Apache 2.0 open-source architecture built on object storage with automatic query-aware data tiering and caching, a zero-ops/serverless model, and enterprise options such as BYOC in your VPC and multi-region replication.
Chroma Cloud scales to millions of collections and billions of documents. It uses a distributed vector index, SPANN. It is backed by object storage to enable low cost. There is no operational complexity to manage or to provision based on different sized workloads.
Chroma Cloud is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and extremely fault tolerant. It runs in various regions on AWS and GCP.
